I realize there are much more serious things going on there, and perhaps my comments reek of Western condescension, but as I'm watching events in Iran, I can't help thinking that they have a "Supreme Leader" and a "Guardian Council".
Don't these sound like titles you'd find for rulers in a society portrayed in a comic book? Or maybe in North Korea with the Great Leader and the Dear Leader. Then again, I always got a kick out of the job title "Webmaster". That sounds like a comic book villain to me.
Well, I've been in San Diego for about 2 weeks now and my head's hasn't spun this fast since the last time I drank 12 tequila shots to win a bet - lost the drinks, won the bet (OK - not really, but it sounds good).
Anyway, I rolled into town around 11PM and promptly got lost. Now, I do not have an internet enabled phone. However, I do have a cousin in Oregon. Now, late at night, my Oregonian cousin is generally sitting up at home looking at extremely anatomically accurate pictures of various people over the internet. So, I gave her a call and asked her how to get from where I was to where I wanted to be. There's something a little odd about being lost in San Diego and getting directions from a woman in Oregon, who had never been to San Diego and was busy looking at pictures of what folks generally have under their clothes. But, it worked.
According to CNN Dawt Calm, a judge in Saudi Arabia has stated that it is reasonable for a husband to slap a wife who spends too much money. This was in a seminar on domestic violence.
No report was given as to whether wives have equal slapping rights.
What I should get a nephew (now 7) for his birthday. Past offerings have included a magic set, a Venus Fly-Trap plant and a robot building kit. He's been learning French in school, so I'm thinking about the Asterix comics, but any and all suggestions are welcome.....
This is a little pathetic, but last night I dreamt that I was listening to a painfully boring talk. It was so frustratingly, droningly dull, that I woke myself up.
I've heard of something being so boring that it puts you to sleep, but so boring that it wakes you up????
All I can say is that tonight I'd better get a better dream, or I'm going to switch sub-consciousnesses!
CNN has reported that a Saudi judge refused to annul the marriage of an 8 year old girl to one of her father's creditors. Although, he did leave room for the girl to seek divorce on her own, once she reaches puberty.
In reporting this story, CNN referenced an Al-Hayat article, where Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh was quoted as saying:
"It is incorrect to say that it's not permitted to marry off girls who are 15 and younger ...A girl aged 10 or 12 can be married. Those who think she's too young are wrong and they are being unfair to her."
I'll plead guilty.... Sometimes when bored, I'll watch network T.V...Tonight, I saw a show "Lie to Me", which is about folks who are experts at reading body language and so determining when people are lying or hiding something.
Tonight, they used their truth detection skills to save a bunch of construction workers who were trapped when a building collapsed.
Fortunately, they were able to use their acute powers of observation and body language to determine
1. One of the workers was addicted to pain meds
2. Another had M.S.,
3. but did not beat his wife,
4. although she did have a brief affair with his supervisor while they were separated
5. The building inspector was paid not to inspect
6. The mayor was covering up a possible source of methane under the building being constructed, since she wanted it to generate jobs
And if it weren't for this, the trapped workers would've died underground.
I can hardly wait for next week, when they run a heart-transplant team....
